A girl's dad comes home from the war with a leg missing. She wants a horse but her dad can't afford one.

From Amazon:

Hannah, 13, has always loved watching horse races on television with her father, but when she begins to help out at a local riding stable, she discovers how much more she enjoys working with real animals, especially those who have suffered abuse.

She particularly loves a filly named Rega, the offspring of a Premarin mare (a pregnant horse from which urine is collected to make pharmaceuticals).

When her dad returns from Iraq as an amputee suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Hannah's work at the stable not only helps her cope with the problems at home, but also leads her to equine-assisted psychotherapy and riding therapy for her troubled father.

I had a dream that I saw The Outside of a Horse at the movies a couple of years ago
by: Anonymous

Ever since I read The Outside of a Horse so many times, I had a very feel-good dream about seeing it at the movies a couple of years ago and I noticed something that was so different from the novel. I saw a middle-aged cowboy comforting Hannah and encouraging her to be brave and strong for Rega-reassuring her that she did the right thing to replace Rega's amputated leg for a prosthetic leg. After giving her comforting Hannah and reassuring her that she did the right thing to let the horses and the people that work for them assist her and her father with equine therapy and letting Rega wear a prosthetic leg, something miraculous just happened: the cowboy magically revealed himself as a real angel by revealing his white robe, wings, and halo which is a message of the triumph of overcoming the trauma that Hannah's dad had to deal with. Some of the guys and girls were seeing it, too. They thought it was ludicrous but I embraced the situation because I was so content that people with different types of disabilities can overcome adversity.

The Outside of a Horse is so touching that it should be made into a major motion picture someday
by: Anonymous

I have read The Outside of a Horse lots of times and nearly cried when I got to the chapters that were really touching. I was hoping it would be made into a movie someday. The best time for the horse story to come out in theaters is on a Memorial Day weekend, because of the soldiers that come home from the war with missing legs. I was also hoping that it would come out on Memorial Day weekend of 2014, because I really don't want to see the 4th Transformers movie, because I'm already out of my robot phase. If The Outside of a Horse was a movie, based on the book, and it came out on a Memorial Day weekend, it wouldn't be so crowded on the first night since a lot of non-horse crazy people would find it too sentimental. But that's how the story is. And that's the way I like it.
