I read Keeping Secrets by Maggie Dana straight through! It’s a really good horse book. I liked the main character, Kate and I liked the fact that the story was full of suspense. It’s about three day eventing, which is fun because I am trying that myself!

This would be a good book for a horsecrazy girls of many ages. It’s very well written and an easy read - maybe not for really young girls, but good for everyone else. I am so glad the author sent me a copy and can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Here’s the description from the author:

A beautiful horse is dead, and it’s all her fault . . . which is why 14-year-old Kate McGregor has put horses and riding out of her life.

Forever!

But her new job as a companion to Holly Chapman, a former riding star who’s now confined to a wheelchair, takes her back to the barn where she’s forced to confront her guilt. Can Kate keep her terrible secret from Holly, who is fast becoming her best friend? And, more important, can she keep her secret from Angela Dean who lives for only two things—winning ribbons and causing trouble?

And her best friend holly when she moves to timber ridge stables but there is a downside to timber ridge Angela Dean. Will do whatever it takes to win but will she go too far?

Racing into Trouble
by: Sydney from Horsecrazygirls.com

This is the second book in the Timber Ridge series. Like the first book, it's really well written and I read it one sitting! I like the characters and the story.

I just wish I were Kate and rode at a top barn and got to go to all the great shows!!

I would definitely recommend this book for most ages, maybe ten and up...?

I really look forward to more books in this series!

Hi
by: ranchgirl

I like dressage too. My story is about a girl who wants a horse. She doesn't have money. So she works at a barn. Her boss gives her a foal to keep. I posted it on this website. It's called Dream Come True.

For Sydney
by: Maggie Dana

Hi Sydney and all horse crazy girls

I'll be glad to answer questions ... about the story, the characters and the horses ... even about myself, though I'm not nearly as interesting as Kate and Holly and their fabulous horses.

I'll check back in a couple of hours to see what's cooking.

For ranch girl
by: Maggie Dana

I like all kinds of riding, but if I had to choose the one I liked best, it would be dressage. I love watching Grand Prix, especially when they do it to music (the kur). It's a great discipline and all horses, no matter what they're being used for, can benefit from it.

What's your story about?

Hi Maggie Dana
by: ranchgirl

I have never read that book, but it sounds great! I am writing a story on this website.

I have a question. What discipline do you like the most?

I think it's great that you read that review.

Keeping Secrets: Interview with the Author
by: Sydney from HorseCrazyGirls.com

I asked the author of Keeping Secrets some questions to share with all of you. Hope you enjoy this interview!

How long have you been crazy about horses?

More or less forever, but let me qualify that. My first riding lesson, at age 5 (in England, where I grew up) was less than memorable. In fact, I hated it so much, I didn't try again for another 3 years. Then a school friend invited me (actually, she challenged me!) into taking lessons with her at a new stable, and all it took was the right horse and the right instructor, and I was hooked for life.

This stable was slap bang in the middle of Pinewood studios (in England). I not only learned to ride, I got to do it amid the excitement of movies being made. One of the girls I rode with was a stunt double. She once rode side-saddle over a jump for a young actress who didn't know how to ride.

Do you ride today? What kinds of riding have you done?

As a kid, I owned a black pony named Smokey. He was terrified of anything that looked like a whip, but I didn't know that when I first got him. For a costume class, my mother made me a Horse Guards' (soldier's) outfit that involved a helmet, snug-fitting white pants, and a wooden sword. The day before the show, Smokey and I practiced.

I stuck my foot in the stirrup and was halfway over Smokey's back when the sword banged into his side. Off he went ... at a gallop ... with me hanging on like a cowboy. Needless to say, the pants split, got covered with mud, and I had to abandon the sword. Mom washed and mended the pants and the next day, Smokey and I won the costume class ... swordless!

I still ride, occasionally. I've ridden dressage (not very well), done a little jumping, and have always loved trailing riding. My grown-up daughter has horses (a Morgan and a Shetland), and I love helping her muck stalls. I'm very handy with a broom and pitchfork.

Why did you decide to write this book and how did you get the idea for it?

I devoured horse books as a kid, and when my own daughter fell in love with horses, she asked me to write her a story. So I did. That was quite a few years ago, and I've been writing horse stories (and books for grownups) ever since.

When writing my horse books, I strive for fun and adventure. But more important, I strive for accuracy. I hate reading books where a character's leading a horse from its off (right) side or not properly cooling it off before putting it away.

How long did it take you to write it?

Three months, or so, for the first draft. Then another month for rewrites. Plus one more for editing and tweaking.

Do you plan to write more in this series?

Definitely. I'm working on the second Timber Ridge Riders book, "Racing into Trouble," right now.

Anything else you'd like to share, feel free to do that.

To all you girls who're lucky enough to grow up around horses ... give your horse lots of hugs, and don't forget to hug the grownups who make it all possible.
